    Suggestions for effective e-mail communication:

    A Good Impression
    • Start your text with the name of who you're writing to (even though it's in the header) and end with your name - like a letter - it makes it more personal
    • Remember that you don't have facial expressions and tone of voice to help convey your meaning.
    • Proper spelling, grammar and punctuation usage are important for creating a good impression - proofread and spellcheck your message before you send it
    Shorthand
    • Common acronyms can be used as shorthand but be careful not to be too cryptic!
      Popular acronyms include:
      BTW       By the way
      LOL        Laugh out loud
      FAQ        Frequently asked questions
      FYI         For your information
    • Using emoticons/smileys is an informal way of clarifying meaning or tone.  Again, few have universal meanings and the other problem is that an emoticon's appearance can vary greatly depending on the font your reader is using.  Some commonly used emoticons are:
      :-) :)        happy/I'm joking
:~) :>)      smileys with different noses
      ;-) ;)        winks/I'm joking/I'm being mischievous
      :-> :>        devilish grin/smirk
      :-/           confused, perplexed
      :-&          tongue-tied
      :-O          yell
    Format
    • Keep paragraphs short - fewer than 15 lines
    • Put a blank line between paragraphs to break up text
    • USING UPPER CASE IS LIKE SHOUTING! - and hard to read.  Mixed case text is easier to read than all the same case
    • Don't use special keys (eg TAB) - these appear differently on different screens
    • Emphasise important words or emotions with *asterisks* or -hyphens-
