The China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development was established in 1992 by the Chinese Government following an international environment conference held in Beijing in October 1990. It is a high level non-governmental advisory body with the purpose to further strengthen cooperation and exchange between China and the international community in the field of environment and development.
The China Council, inaugurated in 1992, has now entered its fourth phase (2007-2012). For the past fifteen years, the Council has been successful in articulating high-level advice and assisting Chinese decision-makers to better understand the links between environmental protection and economic development. In part due to the Councils influence, the Chinese Government is increasingly effective in defining and implementing long-term integrated environmental strategies and policies. The Councils recommendations are part of the input used by relevant ministries to develop policies and incorporate environmental considerations in their five-year planning process and the Council has contributed to a better public understanding and awareness of environmental issues in China.Highlights for 2007
