The impact of the Occupy movement on public spaces and the future of First Nations communities are among topics at the 2012 Canadian Association of Planning Students (CAPS) Conference and General Meeting Feb. 2-4 at Simon Fraser University’s Vancouver campus.

The event is an opportunity for students from across the country to gain a greater understanding of the issues facing urban, regional and resource planning in Canada.

Organized by students from SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM), the sold-out conference serves as an opportunity for students to showcase their academic and professional work and receive feedback from peers and individuals in the industry.

"These planning students will soon be making and influencing the decisions that shape our communities,” says SFU professor Mark Roseland, noting that the conference brings well-deserved national attention to REM's strengths in sustainable community planning and regional development.

Keynote speakers at the event include Gordon Price, director of SFU’s The City Program, Julian Agyeman, professor and chair of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University, and Larry Beasley, retired director of planning for the City of Vancouver.

"The CAPS-ACÉAU 2012 conference is unquestionably the best opportunity to personally interact and network with planning students from across Canada as well as professionals during my studies at SFU,” says Bastian Zeiger, conference organizer and a REM graduate student. “It offers a great chance to broaden my horizons and discuss ideas with my future colleagues and it helps me to scope out opportunities for my own career."
